Yet more cancelled shows on Hulu

A few weeks back, I decided to write a post about the growing list of canceled shows being aired on hulu.com. Since ridding myself of a television set, my main sources of television broadcasts has been either hulu or netflix. Both of which I’ve had some great experiences. I get to watch the shows & movies, when I want and what I want. TV over IP has been steadily climbing in terms of progress and I see no end in sight on what can be achieved. I recently read an article about how Verizon FIOS customers are now getting HD streaming of on demand clips. This in itself is a feat that I probably wouldn’t have even pondered until now. I’m getting a little off topic here.
Back to the point, lately the list of canceled shows appearing on hulu has once again increased. Perhaps not yet exponentially but one can only wonder, “Is Hulu.com the place where shows go to die!?“.

Vanished - Is a drama show about a senator’s wife with a secret past whose been kidnapped. The series itself is based on the journey of several parties(an ex-lover,the senator,a secret cult, government agencies, etc…) trying to locate and either help or sabotage her and her family. Quite an interesting concept, quite similar to 24 but slightly different. I caught this title in hulu.com’s “Recently Added” section and decided to check out the Pilot of the show. I soon became enthralled and found myself seeking more and more of the shows. It took me about a day to watch the entire season, which was only 13 hour long episodes. What’s disappointing is that similar to Las Vegas, there was no official ending to the show. Though it is rumored that the ending can be seen on another show called, “Bones”.

The Loop - Is a comedy show about a young 24ish executive of an airline. What sets this show apart of reality and makes it funny is that he is the only youth bound member of the board and we get to watch his trials and tribulations at work and at home. This show stemmed 2 seasons, the first with two very cute and adorable female roommates. One of whom was the main character’s main crush. What’s surprising is that the producers and writers took a very sharp turn in the second season by writing out the two female roommates and focusing the show about work rather than home life. The change in storyline and plot, took me by surprise as I entered season 2, it also left me with an unsettling feeling that the second season would probably be the last. Again, the no-official-ending-itis kicks in and no ending is really divulged. Season 2 consisted of 10 episodes while Season 1 only had 7. From what I understand Fox had ordered 13, so I’m assuming there are 3 unreleased episodes sitting on a shelf in a remote desolate room just collecting dust. Mimi Rogers(ex-wife of Tom Cruise, pre-Nicole Kidman days), still looks strikingly beautiful in the show. In fact, she seems to have a greater role on the show in the second season.

Off in limbo at the moment…

Life - is a show about a cop who was wrongfully sentenced to jail for a bank heist. Through a very devoted lawyer he is set free on an appeal and awards a lump some of money. Now he’s armed with finances, he returns to the police force to secret pursue the true criminals of the crime he unwittingly served jail time for. It’s a mix of cop drama, comedy, mystery and zen-like crime fighting. This show was stuck in limbo since the Writer’s Guild Strike, while the studios ordered additional shows it hasn’t since been making any new ones. Rumor has it that the show will be brought back to life towards the 2009, I’m not going to hold my breath.

What sucks is that all these shows had a lot of potential. Maybe due to lack of advertising, public knowledge, bad scheduling or a mixture of all those mentioned, they got canceled. What sucks even more is that I’m now just starting to discover them but only getting to enjoy them briefly before coming to a unresolved ending. I wish, it was as simple as getting enough people to write letters to the studios and networks to resurrect these shows but the sad truth is, only a hand full of viewer submitted ideas will ever be heard by the studios. Heck, I’m still waiting for an official ending to “The Pretender” and it’s now going on 7 years. Don’t mean to be pessimistic but the studios just don’t care when it comes to our opinions, but rather how many of us tune in.

Oh well…
