Review of “The Air I Breathe”

I just got done watching “The Air I Breathe”, and I have to admit this was a pretty interesting flick. One that I didn’t expect to be entertaining. That’s probably why I had put off watching it for a while now.

Prior to checking out this movie, I read several mixed reviews. Some found the movie too predictable, others did not enjoy the subtle and sometimes overly brandished overtones of the movie. Even professional critics gave this movie a low rating. I can’t help but wonder if I would’ve picked it up if it were a mainstream movie. It’s a strange impulse of mine to choose an independent flick over anything mainstream, but this one had an all star cast which made me doubt my enjoyment of this movie even more.

Tonight was different, I was stuck with a dilemma. I could either watch some mundane Friday night shows or kill some time with a movie. I would’ve chosen neither if only I hadn’t downed a 32oz. bottle of Red Bull. First I watched, “Children of Men” which was a pretty good movie but definitely left me longing for more. That’s when I decided it was time to open up “The Air I Breathe” and rid it from my to-watch list.

The first few moments of the movie was spent trying to figure out if that was indeed Forest Whitaker I watch watching. I found myself astounded by the amount of weight he lost. It left me feeling confused, here’s the new and improved Whitaker but why is he playing such an annoying role? The character made me want to reach for the remote and smash it against the DVD. I opted not to break anything and continued watching. On the back of my mind, I am waiting for Sarah Michelle Gellar(SMG) to appear and start kissing some of the other female leads in the movie. While I was waiting for SMG to make her appearance I found myself getting more and more interested in the film. Soon I my interest spiraled into fascination as to how much more ridiculous the next scene will be. Yes, it’s true almost the entire flick is unrealistic and implausible to real life but… That’s what some films are meant to do. The dialog in the movie was pretty interesting but overall its the stories that kept me watching.

In many ways it’s reminiscent of “Babel” or “11:14″, all based on the concept that the lives of a handful of  people are somehow intertwined in complex and often times unfathomable ways.

As usual, to really enjoy a movie it requires the moviegoer to be in the right state of mind. Just like a cheap date, if your both happy you’ll be more likely to be entertained. I think if you enjoyed either “Babel” or any other films in the like genre, this film will be quite a worthwhile experience.
