Sometimes I get asked what books I’ve read or movies I’ve seen. So I figured here’s a good place to share some of my recommendations. You might notice some overlap, like movies from books or vice versa. I have a tendency to read books that good movies come from.
Books
I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell
I happened to pick this book up at an airport while waiting a plane. After reading the first few chapters on the plane I couldn’t put this book down. It’s simply a masterpiece of calamity. Apparently the author(Max Tucker) started this book from his blog which now details his exploits of trying to get a movie made. I wouldn’t be surprised this book makes it onto the big screen.
I decided to pick this book up after watching the movie. There’s just something about the book and character that I can relate too. I’m surely not going to scale the wilderness of Alaska but in one way or another it’s inspired me.
This book was an interesting read as it discusses issues with ex-pats in Thailand and the women they fall in love with while there. It gets rather in-depth on the social and psychological issues that occur when people from two completely different cultures come together. Oh and there’s murder, drugs and sex involved too.
This book really requires no introduction. It was a masterful movie and a great read. Some minor and major changes took place between the movie and the book. Both are worthwhile.
I’m not even sure if this book is available in the States. I recall finding it while in Bangkok, Thailand. Some books there for whatever reason aren’t available in the US. The book was a great read, it’s memorable for me because while overseas I went to a bar called, “The Big Mango” and had some of the best JalapeƱos Burgers in the Far East.
Beat the Dealer: A Winning Strategy for the Game of Twenty-One
This was a book I picked up a few years ago. I think it was around the time I had turned 21 and was legal to gamble. I don’t personally find gambling fun, its an easy way to part from hard earned money. But it did give me some idea of how the casinos have a higher advantage to its patrons.
Comics and Graphic Novels

The Big Book of Conspiracies (Factoid Books)
The Big Book of the Unexplained (Factoid Books)
I came across Factoid Books while watching an episode of MTV’s “Cribs” years ago. A singer(Richard Melville Hall aka Moby) whom lived in Downtown NYC at the time had a collection of these books(graphic novels) and praised them. I got curious so I went out to buy one and eventually had to buy the whole set. There’s definitely more than just 3 books, I’d say there’s about 7 for the entire collection.
Movies
This is a recent movie I saw that I found quite gripping. Its the story of a child vigilante who turns the tables on a pedophile. I won’t ruin the ending but it’s a nice shocker.
A recent movie from one of my favorite Hong Kong directors, Wong Kar Wai. A cast of A-list celebs are in this movie but I find that the storyline is quite captivating. Definitely worth watching on a slow Sunday evening.
