My Netflix Reviews

I’ve been using Netflix for several years now. It almost my primary source for movies. One of my favorite features is that it allows for quick and convenient ratings. To date I have about 2,242 rated through Netflix. Obviously this isn’t all the movies I’ve seen since there are many Asian titles that are not yet available for US release or sponsored. It’s really great to have a database of movies that I’ve already seen. This gives me a chance to reflect on whether or not I feel like renting them again or simply to keep in mind as a suggestion for friends. Netflix also utilizes the existing rated movies to recommend movies to me. I thought it’d be nice to share some brief reviews I’ve written on Netflix. Keep in mind that they may be terse and rather crude.

THE KUMITE[aka "Star Runner"]::Review::

As mentioned in the other reviews this is a HK movie titled, “Star Runner” which was re-branded and re-released as “The Kumite”. I’ve found that Vanness Wu is possibly the worse actor on the face of the earth. Apparently he used to be a singer(he should stick to his day job). Like the other reviewers, I wish to slap some sense into the directors and writers who took on this project as it is clearly rubbish. Don’t waste your time. If I could give it negative stars I would. Quite possibly the worse action movie to ever come out of HK.

Jake McNeil does a pretty good job of reviewing this movie on the DEN site. I pretty much have to agree with him 100% on this one.

Dragon Heat[aka "Dragon Squad"]::Review::

My initial impression of this movie is that the director tried too hard to make it look like a ‘Guy Richie’ film. With excessively unnecessary cut scenes. It does not live up to any expectations and its just plain god awful. I’d have given it only 1 star(sadly I can’t give negative scores), but Maggie Q is in this movie and she is super fine. The premise of this story is that there are a handful of ‘elite’ team player whom each specialize in a specific field of mercenary tactics. The weapons used in the film are mostly ones you’d find in a video game(CounterStrike) from deagles to mp5s’ which is lifelike but another faux pa is the unusual handling of the weapons. A another detraction from this movie is that it has one of HK’s worst actors(Vanness Wu), who can’t act[period]. The storyline is weak at best, this movie depicts how even crappy movies can get across the assembly line and make it onto DVD. My suggestion, is save yourself the time and just skip this movie. Don’t waste even a movie rental on this rubbish.
Trouble Makers::Review::

I’m a big fan of Maggie Q, she’s gorgeous, funny and cute all rolled into one tight package. To be fair, that would probably be the only reason anyone would rent(definitely not purchase worthy) this film. I’m happy to report that Q does play a major role in this film even though she’s only the supporting actress. The film quality much like the acting abilities of the main character leaves much to be desired. The plot really is too ridiculous to warrant it a comedy but definitely of smirk caliber. It’s quite disappointing despite the quite semi-famous supporting cast. Bottom line: If your a big fan of Maggie Q and would love to smirk at a few supposedly funny scenes, this is the film to rent. Sadly, this is one of those films you find funny only because of its’ poor production quality. Message to Maggie Q: Please for the sake of all your fans pick some quality movies to star in. After the miserable failure of Dragon Heat(aka Dragon Squad) your really not making much progress.
He was a Quiet Man::Review::

First off this film has really nice casting with Christian Slater, Elisha Cuthbert, William H.Macy. Like many of the other reviewers, I felt the film lacked consistency. The first part of the film had quite a lot of scenes that contained elements of a dark comedy(a bit like a darker version of Office Space). The latter part of the film was complete drama. It’s almost like an adult version of “Heathers”. The overall theme of this movie is a bit controversial which may have been the reason it wasn’t released in theaters, that or lack of MPAA rating. I’m glad I saw this film and would recommend it to anyone given the right mindset before watching it. Arguably one of the best films in it’s category(if only it had one).
