Re-modification of the 3ColumnK2 Theme

After upgrading WordPress to version 2.5.1, I noticed some issues with the 3ColumnK2 Theme. Some database errors started to appear in the K2 Options screen(unfortunately I wasn’t able to screen capture it) regarding some missing category tables. After closer inspection it looked like I had simply ran out of tables a lotted to me by my Web Host(MidPhase). So I decided to get rid of some unused tables via deletion of certain WordPress plug-ins. I had amassed quite a large collection since starting this site and have noticed no increase in traffic.

So I deleted some plug-ins and deactivated the K2 Theme but something still wasn’t right so I deleted K2 as well. I started from scratch and uploaded Bharath Kumar’s 3ColumnK2 theme again.

To get rid of this padding, these are the steps I went thru:

By default, the WordPress themes all appear to have a padding set to 20px, to me it looks weird and out of place. In fact, I find it downright annoying to look at.

1.) Theme Editor

2.) Locate the Stylesheet(style.css)

3.) Locate the #page portion of the stylesheet:

4.) By default, the padding value is 20px 0 10px;

I simply remove change it to 0px 0 10px.

To add a pattern to the background:

The default background for Wordpress in most themes are pretty much bland. It feels empty. So I needed to change it. I’ve always had an affinity for patterned backgrounds. So here, I decided to experiment a little and try out some different patterns.

1.) Determine where in the style sheet the background color is set. If your CSS savvy you’ll know immediate where to look. But for the uninitiated or rusty HTMLers’ like myself. I first determined what the color code for the background was and locate it in the style sheet.

Here, I found that the default color code is #EDEDED, so I headed over to the style.css and simply ran a search for #EDEDED.

As shown in the picture above. The area to modify is under the body { constraints.

2. Change the value.

background: url(/patterns/pattern_04.gif) repeat scroll center top;
text-align: center;

I’m documenting the changes and also sharing this info to anyone that’s reading. I’d appreciate any input as well on any ways to make this process more efficient.
