So the iPhone3G got released Friday morning(in some cases Thursday night). As I had expected, lines were forming late Wednesday night(in some cases a week before). It may be no surprise to some but Apple & AT&T suffered some issues that prevented functionalty of the sold iPhone3Gs’.
Apparently buying the iPhone3Gs’ weren’t the problem. Activating them was an all too different story. Speculations were widespread, AT&T was pointing their fingers at Apple and… well, Apple was just taking the blame. And for good reasons too!
The overwhelmingly high numbers of early adopters were out in masses trying to get their hands on the new happy shiny gadget(I too felt the urge to wait in line!). Unfortunately once purchased these early adopters continued to suffer the long wait time to get everything up and running.
Apple & AT&T’s mandated in-store activation policy caused a lot of the problem. Lines were moving slowly already but having to wait for the store clerk to activate each and every phone definitely caused delays. But the final blow was the apparent amount of activations that cause the support servers to be rendered incapable of completing the transactions. This meant that any one with a first generation iPhone was not only left with an iPhone3G that wasn’t working, their old phone was just as useless.
After reading the early reviews made widely available, I question whether or not now is the time to consider other phones to replace the Blackberry Pearl I currently own. I’ve already got bad connectivity, I can hold off on a few more days of this malarchy.
Granted that the issue was supposedly resolved the same day(but several hours later). I suspect there may be additional problems to come. I’m not too eager to do beta testing for an incomplete or unanticipated problem for the iPhone3G. If and when I get my phone, I want it to be at the very least functional.
Sidenote:
The market hasn’t been doing well either, so my APPL shares are taking a pounding. I’m very hopeful that tomorrow my shares will at least rise to a respectable value.
